8) Hybrid car in hot and cold
weather?
High cold weather may result in a small loss in gas efficiency.
In cold weather, hybrid cars employ different strategies to quickly
get the battery up to a more acceptable operating temperature as
soon as the car is turned on.
But in some mild
hybrids, such as the Honda Insight, the performance loss while
the battery pack gets up to operating temperature, may be more noticeable.
Honda’s specifications indicate that its Integrated Motor Assist system
will operate as low as 22 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The Honda
Insight has an auxiliary starter motor that is used to start the
gasoline engine in extreme cold weather.
